Polka Scare Ignites Moral Discussion at Lucky Star Lounge
A new breed of Polka enthusiasts have rocked what
was once a fun loving sweat producing beer swigging
couple creating activity. It has transformed the bouncy
side to side swift twirling heel toe motion frenzy we call
Polka into the a dark creation of hurky jerky questionable
movements and behaviors previously unknown to the
simple pleasant world of Polka.
" Disco Polka".
These two words have turned the world of Polka into a
confused mucked up mess.
The person behind this movement innocently began the
sound in 1977 with an album of "Disco Polka" music.
The man, Myron Floren.
Soon to follow in 1979 was the legendary Jimmy Sturr with
"Polka Disco". Sturr's attempt to place Polka first to regain
some of the influence had little impact on the fledgling
movement.
Not long after we saw Kool and the Gang's " Polka Motionation"
and their follow up, the hugely popular, Get Down on My Polka".
The stage had been set. KC and the Sunshine Band's " Shake Your Polka", Alicia Bridge's
husky voice version of Polka classics," Down in the Polka Round", and probably the last big
"Disco Polka" hit before this version came crashing down" the Village People's, Roll Out the
Disco".
Soon thereafter "Disco Polka" went underground and disappeared from mainstream
society. What has risen to take it's place has shocked Americans and the world as its
influence is silently sliding into the culture of young and old alike.
As we continue this series what will be brought
forward are the long term cultural and societal
issues arising from the re-emergence of this hybrid
form of Polka with its infectious attacks on the
                   human psyche.
Part two will include personal testimonials of
"Disco Polka" victims who were rescued from
movements and dictatorial dance leaders across the United States and Pennsylvania.
